Saint Bernard dogs are a large working breed from the Swiss and Italian Alps. The breed is named after the Hospice Saint Bernard, a hospice located in the Great St. Bernard Pass in the western Alps. St. Bernards were originally bred for mountain rescue and are known for their loyalty, imposing size, and thick coats. They can weigh up to 180 pounds and stand up to 28 inches tall. St. Bernards are gentle, kind-hearted dogs and are known for having a calm, patient demeanour. They are great family dogs and love being around people. They are well-loved for their intelligence and trainability and often excel in obedience and agility competitions.
